Twin brothers Jason and Matthias Inero are the favorite sons of the great dragon lord of fire. More often than not they get whatever they want. Matt wants to do great things for his people while Jason wants to go off and explore the world. Both can have what they desire, but not until they take a bride and enter into adulthood.
Enter Kat and Gwen, two girls from very different backgrounds. Kat is happy to leave her home when the royal guard comes to bring her to loving arms of her childhood sweetheart, Matt. Gwen on the other hand is livid to be taken from her farm only to be thrust into Jason's life, and he's not to thrilled with the idea either. They have one year to find happiness with each other, or else they will be placed at the mercy of the ruthless dragon lord Lynx. Favorite or not, dragon law must be obeyed.
As their nation begins to prepare for war against a neighboring tribe, the brothers find themselves as key components in the battle plans. A dark prophet has had a vision of Inero victory, but at what cost? Both must decide where their loyalties lie and what they're willing to sacrifice – including each other – to achieve their goals.
Last year I came across a new YA author, J.F. Jenkins - I was lucky enough to be part of a book tour (via The Teen Book Scene) of her first installment of The Dragons Saga: Legend of the Oceina Dragon. I fell in love right away. Not only with dragons, the romance and the plots but with J.F. Jenkins herself! I honestly cannot tell you in words what her writing does to me. There is something so simple yet complex with her word choice, her tone, and everything about it that continually blows me away. But I'm getting a head of myself.... So what did I think of her 2nd installment? You guessed it! LOVED it!
I loved The Legend of the Oceina Dragon so much I was terrified that my expectations would not be met with this installment - I couldn't get over Tai's and Darien's relationship. Boy was I wrong! This time Jenkins gives you the story of the Inero Dragons, in particular that of Jason and Matt. Jason and Matt are what you call 'touched' twins, filled with magical capabilities and their father's, the Inero Dragon Lord, favorite. As part of their 'right of passage' into manhood (for a better lack of terms) they choose from a group of girls their future wife. Jason chooses Gwen while Matt chooses his long time love Kat. Instead of focusining on just one relationship, Jenkins magnificently focuses on each brother and their relationship with each other, their wives, and how they are each affected by such.
While each brother is learning their roles as husband their worlds are starting to change drastically. The Inero Lord (their father) is ready for a war with the Oceina Dragons faction. Again Jenkins has magnificently crafted a plot full of suspense, a bit of adventure (flying dragons and all) and you are left wanting to discover the truth of secrets that fill the Inero Territory. You even get to experience a pivotal scene from The Legend of the Oceina Dragon from the Inero's point of view.
I honestly cannot think of anything to say about this novel that lacks praise of any kind. I love that you are given a view of the other side of the Dragons. As with The Legend of the Oceina Dragon I fell in love with how human Jenkins' dragons are but at the same time I am able to imagine how huge and beautiful they are when they are in their dragon forms. New mysteries are brought up in this series, in particular "The Great Dragon Lord", which leaves you wanting more! Who knew reading about dragons would be this much fun!
